Kiteboarding

waterMainstreamNetherlands, 1977

Riding a board across water while being pulled by a large controllable kite. Kiteboarding combines wind power with board skill to produce massive jumps, high speeds, and the freedom to ride waves, flat water, or both.

History

The concept of kite-powered sailing dates to the 1970s, but modern kiteboarding took shape in the late 1990s when inflatable kites made the sport accessible and safe enough to scale. It has grown explosively and entered the Olympics in 2024.

Culture

Kiteboarding culture is global, wind-chasing, and tech-obsessed. Riders migrate with the seasons, following wind forecasts. The community is collaborative because the sport is genuinely dangerous to learn alone.
