Skateboarding

boardMainstreamCalifornia, USA, 1950

Riding a wooden deck mounted on four urethane wheels across pavement, concrete, and anything else that holds. Skateboarding is as much a creative language as a sport — an act of reinterpreting the built environment.

History

Born in the 1950s when California surfers bolted roller skate wheels to planks to surf the sidewalks. The Zephyr team reinvented it in empty swimming pools in the 1970s. Street skating emerged in the 1980s and turned every curb, rail, and stair set into a canvas.

Culture

Skateboarding resists institutionalization. It has its own media, fashion, art, and economy. The culture prizes creativity, persistence, and individual expression over competition and conformity.
