Motocross

motorMainstreamEngland, 1924

Off-road motorcycle racing on natural-terrain circuits featuring jumps, berms, and whoops. Motocross is controlled violence — rider and machine pushed to the absolute limit on dirt.

History

Evolved from British scrambles racing in the 1920s. The sport spread across Europe and reached the United States in the 1960s, where it exploded in popularity. The AMA National Championship and FIM World Championship became the premier series.

Culture

Motocross culture is blue-collar, family-driven, and relentlessly competitive. Riders start as young children, and the commitment required — physical, financial, emotional — creates a bond that lasts lifetimes.
