Mountainboarding

boardNicheEngland, 1992

Riding an oversized skateboard with pneumatic tires and bindings down dirt trails, grass hills, and mountain terrain. Mountainboarding takes the board off the pavement and into the wild.

History

Developed in the early 1990s by snowboarders and skateboarders who wanted to ride year-round on any terrain. The first purpose-built boards appeared in England and quickly spread through the action sports underground.

Culture

Mountainboarding has a tight-knit, DIY community. Riders build their own trails and jumps, and the culture retains an underground grassroots energy that larger board sports have outgrown.
