History
Leo Seltzer created roller derby as a Depression-era endurance spectacle in 1935. It evolved through theatrical phases before being reborn in the early 2000s as a legitimate, athlete-driven, predominantly women's sport.
Culture
Modern roller derby culture is fiercely feminist, queer-positive, and community-owned. Most leagues are skater-operated. The sport celebrates power, strategy, and the punk ethos of doing it yourself.
